“Poor children are at an enormous disadvantage on entering school”. This is according to a recent article published by Business Day on the National School Effectiveness Study.
The study, a culmination of six years of work by education researchers and economists, analysed the test results and backgrounds of 16 000 children to determine what shapes a child’s ability to perform. Poverty was found to be one of the main contributors hampering the growth of today’s youth in the education system and is often the catalyst behind several other issues facing today’s children such as literacy and numeracy skills.
At Compuscan we understand the value of a quality education and that it is a long term investment not only in the future of a child but in that of the country as a whole. Thus, while poverty eradication is a long term goal of our nation, we believe that each business has a responsibility to ensure the future of our youth.
In this light, Compuscan has decided to donate over R100 000 to assist schools nationwide overcome the problems they face daily. This is in addition to our current social investment programmes which include providing assistance to Village Kids Nursery School and the Child Witness Centre and the training provided through our free Money Management Workshops.
To ensure that we target the root problems faced by schools Compuscan has asked its clients to nominate schools they believe would benefit from the donation and indicate how the funds could be put to the best use by the school. In January Compuscan hopes to begin its nationwide drive to invest in the nominated schools and provide tangible assistance in any way possible.
In the spirit of the festive season Compuscan also made its annual visit to the Village Kids Nursery School to hand over shoeboxes filled with toys, sweets, clothes and other items. Santa himself delivered the gifts and the children were absolutely thrilled with items. Compuscan is proud to be involved with such a meaningful initiative that brings joy to the lives of these special children.
